Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
venice, Very good point there! What I would recommend would depend on their likes and dislikes; no two of us are alike. If they want a little pampering and a little more upscale adventure and still keep with the mass marketed product I would send my friends on Celebrity. If they want to relax and enjoy themselves and do not care about being catered to, but like a friendly crew I would say NCL, especially ships like the Dawn and the Sun. To my enemies, that I have to speak to, I guess I would send them on either Viking Serenade (which isn't RCI anymore) or Majesty of the Sea, RCI especially an inside cabin, on a 4 day cruise where it rains 21/2 days.

Venice,
I wouldn't normally speak to an enemy (non-friend) out of choice. But co-workers from hell, some of my in-laws and the family's black sheep are close enough. You speak to them because you have to and you don't get to pick your relatives or co-workers.
It would really ruin my cruise if one them showed and wanted hang out.
Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
Princess to friends. I have only been on one non-Princess, but would maybe recommend some of the older Carnival ships that have had some major problems for an enemy. The White Star Line is a product of Cunard--but I would give the Queen Mary 2 a chance. It's the British/Canadian loyalty coming out in me! Lynne
Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
Okay, now I'm scared. I see more than one who would recommend NCL to an enemy. I'm preparing for my very first cruise -- on NCL. Can someone please tell me what makes NCL so enemy-friendly? BTW, I picked this cruise on my own - it was not enemy-recommended:-)
Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
CeCe. It's nothing to be afraid of.
Almost any cruise to a first-timer is a slice of heaven. In my opinion, it’s only when you have cruised other cruise lines that the NCL comes up short. While there are many things I liked about NCL, there are just as many things that did not. A lot of that comes from my making comparisons of the things I feel are important to me on a cruise.
I did not find the NCL staff as friendly as the CCL or RCCL lines. The overall service and the attitude of my room steward were at best half-ass. We asked out room steward for ice and he acted like we ruined his day. After that we found out where he got it and helped ourselves. The staff is constantly trying to get you to buy water or drinks and you have to say no thank you several times to the same server and then another that was within 5 feet of us and tries his luck. I think it has to do with the tip being included in the final bill. Good service or bad they expect the same tip amount.
The entertainment was weak. On the RCCL the entertainment is top notch. Free style dining means waiting 20 to 30 minutes to be seated. Shore excursions are a lot (in my opinion) higher than the land base excursion companies. NCL is even higher than other cruise lines. However, if you buy your excursion through NCL, you get off the ship before everyone else. As two of the stops made by the Norwegian Sea are by tender service from the ship and they also are the shortest stops. (Go Figure)
The food wasn’t too bad. They grill a lot and I love grilled food, but at times it was closer to Beef Jerky than Bar-B-Que. I had to toss the chicken it was blackened crisp on one side and rare on the other.
NCL is probably a good first choice and if you like it, what hell, sign up for Lattitudes. However, should you become a life time cruiser, I’d upgrade to a CCL or RCCL. Pack you sense of humor and have a great time!!!!
Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
Hello CeeCee, Zack is absolutely right! You won't go wrong with any cruise,,,especially your first cruise. NCL isn't a bad line at all, and in fact, my wife and I sailed on the "Sea" last year, and had a really, really good time. In fact, I've been thinking of another NCL cruise for next year. If you notice my previous post in this cat., I said I'd recommend Carnival for my enemies. Fact of the matter is, that after nearly 100 total cruises, the very best, and the very worst cruises we've ever had were both CARNIVAL. Go figure????
I know you'll have a great time, and we'll see you on your next cruise.

Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
Yeah! I've only cruised Carnival once and it was my first cruise. So maybe that's why I liked it. Since then the next 6 were RCCL and the last one was NCL. I'm back to RCCL for life.
Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
Thanks Zack and Ken for the encouraging words. I'm sailing on the very first run of the Star to the Mexican Riviera -- another mistake on my part I suppose in choosing a brand new itinerary for the Star. The good part of all of this is that since I am a first time cruiser, I don't know what I don't know:-) I'm a fairly easy going person so it would take a major infraction to make me unhappy - chicken burnt on one side and raw on the other might raise my ire a tad. In any event, looking forward to a great time and hope it is so much fun that my hubby forgets about any other form of vacation and we can go on to sample other cruise lines.
Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
I've been on two cruises in my life. HAL to Alaska and RCL to the Caribbean. The service on RCL was far superior to that of HAL. The waiters and cabin stewards are RCL were a lot nicer than on HAL. Not sure why, but that was my experience. I don;t think I would ever go on HAL again.
Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
Carnival to friends, absolutely!!! Celebrity too, Celebrity is a bit stuffy for my taste but still a great cruise. As for my enemies..............Why would I send an enemy on a cruise???

Re: Which cruise line would you recommend to a friend and wh
Very specifically, I would recommend the Radisson Paul Gauguin to friends. It cruises French Polynesia. If you catch it when it is "on special" and with "free air", it's not really overly expensive when you consider that most everything is included, except for alcohol at some times and places, and shore excursions. EVERYONE who has taken it has liked it, except for one person who does not like tropical cruises (Duh?).
I have no recommendation for enemies. On other ships/lines we've had and heard both good and bad experiences. For enemies, I'd have to purposely mismatch their personalities and tastes to the ship, as one man's Heaven is another man's hell. So I would send the "party animals" to the Seven Seas Voyager and quiet types who like space and privacy to one of Carnival's mega ships!
