Default Hot Style for This Summer?

Everybody,

According to a recent news report, Kate Middleton got Prince William's attention by modeling this silk dress in a fashion show. The prince seated in the front row, turned to his budy next to him and remarked that she is "hot," and then approached her at a party that evening.

So is this a harbinger of a trend?

IOW, are we going to see a lot of young ladies wearing transparent mesh dresses this summer in the hopes of luring a handsome gent? After all, it worked for Kate!

And yes, that's Kate walking down the runway in the photo. According to the article, she is the only person who has ever worn the dress.

Norm.

She wore it 9 years ago. Hardly a current trend.

Good one Trip - I was thinking along similar lines - I was too scared to post the comment!

Annie, never be scared on CM to post your honest thoughts... people may not always agree with all of us, all the time, but we all have the right to our opinions. Spirited discussions are good!

I don't think that it was ever a trend.

But the buzz is that wearing the dress is what caught the prince's eye and thus ignited their relationship. Don't you think that fact might entice some (admittedly naive or stupid) young ladies to try wearing something similar in the hope of snagging a guy's affection?

No I don't - it's hardly envelope pushing these days.

I actually had in mind dresses of a less expensive material (a nylon mesh, for example) that would be similarly transparent.

If I were the manager or buyer for a store that sold clothing targeted at young women, I'm pretty sure that I would order a rack of transparent nylon mesh dresses of a similar style, in assorted colors, for immediate delivery and sell them branded as the "Kate Dress" or the "Prince Catcher" or "William's Temptation" or something similar, with options for more if they sell quickly. It certainly would be worth risking the price of one rack to test the market!

I work for a clothing manufacturer, north of Boston, & in these days of watching the bottom line, and the cost involved of making a sample up, for a "chance" to see this very limited trend, for a very limited market, would not be worth the while.

I would fire the buyer that made a decision to take a chance on this. That's saying anyone would decide to go forward to manufacture it.

But if you did, you would get plenty of attention.

I wear shorts in spring, summer and fall, in Connecticut.
Once I move to Florida I will wear them all year long.

I know that this is "off thread", but it seemed like a good place to mention that:

Kate Middleton experienced every little girl's dream: to grow up and marry a helicopter pilot.

That "helicpoter pilot" probably will be the next king.

Say what you want, but I have to give the British Royal Family credit for this: every male member has served on active duty in one branch or another of the British armed forces. None of them have ever shied away from hazardous duty, and those serving in time of conflict have been eager to lead the charge. One cannot accuse the British Monarch of sending everybody else's children and grandchildren into harm's way but not her own.

Yes, many of our American politicians should take note!

Also, keep in mind that a lot of styles that look good on runway models do not look good on the average person. Even young, thin types don't have the walk or the attitude to pull something like this off. Also, I don't think it really is all that attractive a dress....sexy, yes, on the right person, but that is about it's only "virtue".
