Any tips on cabin upgrades??

Anyone have any upgrade stories to share? My husband and I are going on the Navigator of the Seas on March 9, 2009.
We were thinking about paying for an upgrade to a balcony, do they offer upgrades and discounted prices when you check in???

We've been on 30 cruises, and have had one upgrade. It was on Princess.

There's no magic formula for getting an upgrade, although being at the top level in a cruise line's loyalty program would certainly help. I couldn't countl on an upgrade at check-in, especially at a discount. If you want a balcony, you would be better off to snag it now, and not hope for an appearance by the upgrade fairy.

In some fo our cruises the balconies have sold out months before the sailing date.
We did get a an up-grade once from an ocean=view to a balcony.
Since then we allways book one to make sure we get it.

Last week on the Navigator there was a sign saying no upgrades were available the ship was sold out.

I would not count on an upgrade. Easier to get say an inside to better inside or window to better window etc. upgrade then it is to go from an inside to balcony. However I have heard it happen before but not a common thing.

I've still got my fingers crossed for my cruise next week. I work for the parent company of the agency that booked it, I have a little status with RCC, and they have tons of cabins still available that are better than my insider. They said they start applying comp upgrades a week before sailing so I'll be checking daily beginning Thursday!

We aren't looking for a "free" upgrade, we are willing to pay if it is discounted. I found a few posts from other cruiselines that customers have said at the time of their check-in the reservation agent offered them an upgrade at a discounted price. This is more of what we are looking for, has anyone ever heard of this for Royal Caribbean?

I think you're much better off to book what you want up front.
If you could get " upgrades " at a discounted price at the check in counter,
then everyone would be booking all the cheapest insides, waiting to upgrade at check in and it probably would take 2-3 days to get everyone aboard and to reassign their cabins, not to mention the fistfights that would break out when there was a mix-up and too many people showed up claiming the same cabin !!

That would be Cruise Timesharing gone bad!
