Default great emergency idea

Here is a great idea to do in case of an emergency. Have already done it to my cellphone, my kids and my DH's. Thankfully we have never used it.

Paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that person's
identity. You can make their job much easier with a simple idea that
they are trying to get everyone to adopt: ICE. ICE stands for In Case of
Emergency. If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone
under ICE, with the name and phone no. of the person that the emergency
services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and
have your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of
your time to do. Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it
immediately. ICE your cell phone NOW

Paramedic's know what ICE means? Really? I don't know about where you live but here I find it hard to believe that they would even think of looking at your cell. I just have my husbands business card right next to my DL that says in big red letters, IN CASE OF EMERGANCY! I always thought they just look for your DL and call your home. I'm a wrong?

How do Authorities get ahold of family? Do they go to your home or call? Anybody go though this?

Since I already have a lovely 20-something beauty pageant winner on "ice" in my basement, I hesitate to give the authorities anything by which to trace her (or my) whereabouts.

From what I understand they are trained to look at your cell phone if they find no emergency number with your ID. They are aware of this the same way they are trained to look for medic alert bracelets/necklaces.

I received this email and did a bit of research to make sure it wasn't an Internet myth or hoax. It actually sounds like a good idea. It is true. Even if you have your drivers license you may live alone and authorities would have no idea who to contact if your name was Johnson.

I have simple names such as: Wife, Doctor, Daughter, Son in my cell phone for just this reason.

Here is a link to Snopes.com (excellent Internet hoax research tool) that explains more about it.

Take care,
Mike

Whar if you don't have your cell phone on you? Also, I have my cell phone on "lock" in case I lose it (which I nearly did in Boston).

Another point to make is to keep your old cell phones in the glove box of your car. Even though the phone may not be hooked up to the carrier anymore the cell phone company will (by law if I'm correct) connect you to 911 in an emergency.

I keep my old one in the glove box just in case of an accident and my current cell phone is damaged I still have contact to 911.

Regards,
Thomas

Steph:
A couple of weeks ago I was going through my file cabinet and came across our old cell phones that were four years old. Guess what? They powered up, got a signal and when I tried to make a call I got the automated credit card message. I still could have called 911. I don't know how much talk time I would have had but they worked.

There are about 50 "What ifs" to the ICE idea but it is still a good one.

One other thing I found out is that cell phone theft is way down. They have become so common that they aren't the target they were just a couple of years ago. Every kid has one now so they don't need to steal someone else's.

Take care,
Mike
