Default Satellite phone

Anyone ever take a satellite phone with them on their cruise?

Yes, I always travel with my sat phone. What do you want to know?

Thanks for your reply. Does it work well for you, and do you have to be up on deck in order for it to work? How costly is it? I don't know if I would use it enough to justify buying one, but I understand you can rent them. Any details you could offer would be appreciated. Thanks.

I own one that I use for my business. You need to be on deck with clear lines up to the satellites.

As for cost.... cough cough. If I had to pay the bill out of personal money rather than the business, I would probably just send a post card

The sat phones get very expensive, but they simply cannot be beat when you are (literally) in the middle of nowhere and need to make contact with the world.

The phone works in the middle of the desert, in the jungle, on top of a mountain or the middle of the ocean. Can be a real lifesaver, but if you are taking it just to "stay in touch" while on the cruise, don't go through the expense. Whatever it is, it can wait till you get back.

And if it is something really important, the people that need to be able to reach you in an emergency should have the contact information to reach you on board.

If you are sailing with me on the Victory on June 26, look for me and you can use my phone

It's less expensive than using the ship's phone, isn't it? And you can receive calls on it, can't you? Do you have any knowledge about renting?

Per call, it is probably less expensive than the ship's phone, yes.

I don't know about renting one - I have never done it. I think if I did not have one, I would probably not make enough calls to justify the expense of getting one just for a cruise.

If you are a sailor, or a backpacker, or mountain climber, etc., where you often venture far afield with no cell coverage, then it probably would be a good investment for you. But just for a cruise - most of those calls can wait until you get home. In a real emergency, the few dollars for the phone calls will be immaterial.

And, you can always use the internet on the ship as a way to keep in touch.

Just my opinion - as I said, if I didn't already have one, I would not go to the expense of getting it.
